How Often Do Cats Go Into Heat?

Jun 8, 2026

If your female cat is not spayed, she will experience recurring heat cycles (also called estrus). During this time, she is fertile and able to become pregnant.

Unlike dogs, cats are seasonally polyestrous, meaning they can go into heat multiple times during the breeding season. Indoor cats exposed to artificial lighting may cycle.

How Often Do Cats Go Into Heat?

A female cat typically goes into heat every 2–3 weeks during the breeding season if she does not become pregnant.

The heat cycle itself usually lasts 4–10 days, although some cats may show signs for a shorter or longer period.

Because cats can cycle so frequently, an unspayed cat may experience repeated heat cycles throughout the spring, summer, and fall.

At What Age Do Cats Start Going Into Heat?

Most cats reach sexual maturity between 4 and 6 months of age, although some may start earlier or later depending on breed, season, and body condition.

This means a kitten can become pregnant during her first heat cycle.

Signs Your Cat Is in Heat

Common signs include:

  • Increased vocalization or loud yowling
  • Excessive affection and attention-seeking
  • Rolling on the floor
  • Rubbing against people, furniture, or objects
  • Raising the hindquarters when petted
  • Increased restlessness
  • Attempting to escape outdoors
  • Spraying urine in some cases

Many owners mistake these behaviors for pain or illness, but they are normal hormonal behaviors associated with estrus.

Can Cats Become Pregnant During Heat?

Yes. Cats are induced ovulators, meaning ovulation occurs after mating. A female cat can become pregnant during any heat cycle if she mates with a male cat.

Pregnancy can occur surprisingly early in life, even during a cat’s first heat cycle.

Benefits of Spaying

Spaying eliminates heat cycles and provides several health and behavioral benefits:

  • Prevents unwanted pregnancies
  • Eliminates heat-related vocalization and behaviors
  • Reduces the risk of mammary (breast) cancer
  • Prevents uterine infections (pyometra)
  • Helps reduce pet overpopulation

Most veterinarians recommend spaying before the first heat cycle whenever possible.
