DEWORMING

They aren’t very pleasant to think about, but worms are a common problem among pets.

Fortunately, there are ways to protect your furry friend from these internal parasites. There are also treatment options for pets who have already been infected with worms. At Center Veterinary Clinic, we perform deworming in Novato using products that are safer and more effective than those found in pet stores.

DEWORMING: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Dogs and cats are natural hosts for several internal parasites. These parasites are most often referred to collectively as “worms.” Roundworms, hookworms, tapeworms, and whipworms are the most common internal parasites in pets, and only tapeworms and roundworms can easily be observed in a pet’s stool. Kittens and puppies often have roundworms because they are passed from mother to offspring in utero and during nursing.

If your pet has worms, they could experience a wide range of symptoms, including:

  • Poor growth
  • Diarrhea
  • Weight loss
  • Vomiting
  • General unhealthy appearance
  • Dry fur/Poor coat condition

We diagnose parasite infestations by performing a complete physical examination and examining the patient’s feces using a microscope. This allows us to search for parasite eggs and, when necessary, determine what type of infestation is present. From there, we can prescribe a safe and effective dewormer.
